About the Prosper, Texas Area  

Prosper is a vibrant and thriving residential town of approximately 5,907. This charming community offers a country lifestyle with ready access to big city living. Location and Geography 

Prosper is a small rural town in west central Collin County, in the Dallas-Fort Worth metro area of northeast Texas. It is located between McKinney and Denton on Highway 380 and is bisected by Preston Road and the Dallas North Tollway. Celina borders Prosper on the north, while Frisco and McKinney border to the south. Collin County is bounded by Fannin County to the northeast, Grayson County to the north, Rockwall County to the southeast, Hunt County to the east, Denton County to the west and Dallas County to the south. 

The town of Prosper has a total area of 4.9 square miles, none of which is water. 

It sits at an elevation of 748 feet. The local terrain is characterized by mainly flat and gently rolling farm and ranch land, with several nearby lakes and reservoirs. 

Prosper is located approximately 13 miles northwest of Plano, 30 miles northwest of Dallas, and 46 miles northeast of Fort Worth. It is about 6 miles north of Frisco and 10 miles northwest of McKinney.
 

History/Interesting Facts/Historic Buildings and Places 

The first settlers who came to farm the Prosper area arrived in 1846, and by 1893 a post office opened. Between the years 1850 and 1902, two settlements existed; Rock Hill, which was two miles south of the present town, and Richland, which was one mile north. In 1876, when County Courts ordered small tracks of land to be sold, Dr. A. T. Bryant of McKinney purchased the tract, which later became the Town of Prosper. 

The development of the St. Louis and San Francisco Railroad in March of 1902 required the communities of Rock Hill and Richland to combine, forming the Town of Prosper. Shortly after the tracks were laid in the area, the residents and businesses of Richland and Rock Hill relocated to the new railroad community. For years, Prosper was the primary railroad stop between Dallas and Sherman. When the community officials applied for a Post Office, J.C. Slaughter suggested the name Prosper, because of the prosperous crops that year. The town was incorporated in 1914 boasting a total of 500 residents.  

The town became a market center for the local farmers who grew primarily cotton and corn. However, the Great Depression halted the community’s growth, and the population continued to decline until the late 1950s. It was not until1970 that the population reached 501. By 1980 the number of residents had increased to 675, and by 1986, there were eleven businesses providing for the small number of farmers in the area. The mechanization of farming provided the next big impact on the town, and in 1980, the introduction of light industry, combined with the development of the Metroplex, led to Prosper’s increased growth. 

Famous Prosper residents include Torii Hunter, professional baseball player; and former Dallas Cowboys football players Bill Bates and Deion Sanders. Many of the town’s residents are professionals who commute to Frisco, Dallas and other nearby communities.
 

Jobs 

Home to over 100 businesses and a growing population, Prosper’s economy is thriving. Located in one of the fastest growing regions in the nation, the town has enjoyed double digit growth during the last ten years. Its excellent location offers easy access to air services as well as Interstate highway and rail systems, and proximity to major Dallas/Fort Worth markets. It also has the advantage of a young, educated and affluent population base. 

19.07 % of the town’s population is employed in management, business, and financial operations; 24.46 % in professional and related occupations; 12.21 % in service occupations; 23.44 % in sales and office jobs; 0.69 % in farming, fishing, and forestry; 9.78 % in construction, extraction and maintenance; and 10.33 % in production, transportation, and material moving. The unemployment rate is 4.3% and there has been a 2.34% increase in available jobs within the last year. The average commute time is 32 minutes. The median household income is $67,759 and the average per capita income is $36,032. 

Housing  

Prosper is growing rapidly in terms of new home construction, and home sales are increasing. There are many master-planned neighborhoods in the town, with a variety of housing options. Top-notch homebuilders are designing fantastic homes with ample acreage and scenic surroundings. The gently rolling terrain and stunning creek views form an incredible natural backdrop for these beautiful homes. The market is strong and the average time for a home on the market is approximately 64 days. There is plenty of new construction, and most of the homes are on large lots, some of them over two acres in size. Many of these homes allow for horses too. Parks and Recreation 

The town has a number of parks, offering excellent recreational facilities. Main Street Park is located in the downtown area and has two lighted baseball fields, a basketball court, and playground equipment. At Pecan Grove Park you will find a pond, a playground, a creek, playing fields, and hike and bike trails. Town Lake Park boasts a lake and a gazebo, as well as hike, bike and equestrian trails. Folsom Park includes a pond, a playground and trails, while Eagles Landing Fields has a soccer/football field, a softball field, a multipurpose field and hike and bike trails. Another short trail, Chapel Hill Hike and Bike Trail, is on the west edge of Chapel Hill subdivision. 

Prosper High School Tennis Courts are equipped with four lighted tennis courts. Prosper Sports Association offers team participation in basketball, baseball, softball, soccer, football, volleyball, and cheerleading. The town also has a Community Tennis Association, which provides summer camps, private and semi-private lessons and involvement in USTA tournaments, for both minors and adults. For a longer hiking excursion, try Sister Grove Park, a 75-acre hike/bike trail located between Princeton and Farmersville, adjacent to Lake Lavon.  

For larger open spaces, Myers Park and Event Center in nearby McKinney encompasses over 165 acres of rolling land. The park is equipped with a show barn and indoor arena, a stall barn, a reception hall, a gazebo, a picnic pavilion, and two camping areas. The Collin County Farm Museum is also located on the park grounds, managed by the Collin County Historical Society. Also near McKinney is Parkhill Prairie. This 436-acre preserve in northeast Collin County features a 52-acre relic of the Blackland tall-grass prairie and provides magnificent views of the countryside. The city of Plano offers numerous parks, trails, nature preserves and sports complexes for full recreational enjoyment. 

Horseback riding is popular, and the peaceful Prosper area is an ideal place to ride, as evenings bring the tranquility of a stunning sunset. Another option for horseback riding is the Greenbelt Trail, located between Lake Ray Roberts and Lake Lewisville. You can ride, hike or bike the entire length (about nine miles) of the Elm Fork of the Trinity River. And horseback riders can journey all the way around the east side of Lake Ray Roberts, through the state park at Isle du Bois, and further on to Jordan Park.
Avid golfers have access to Prosper’s Gentle Creek Golf Course, which was voted the 15th Best Private Course in Texas by the “Dallas Morning News”. This 18-hole course provides fun and challenges for golfers of all skill levels. At nearby McKinney, you can play the WestRidge Golf Course or any of the two other public courses and five private ones. The Tribute Golf Course and Resort located in The Colony on the shores of Lake Lewisville, is a Scottish links-style course, with dunes, sea washed grasses and challenging water hazards. The Tribute has been ranked among Golf Digest’s top 25 best Texas courses. With all the choices, you will certainly have no difficulty finding a course to suit your style in the Metroplex region. 

Special Attractions 

Prosper offers convenient access to so many Metroplex cultural and entertainment venues. Sports fans can enjoy minor league baseball with the Frisco RoughRiders at the Dr Pepper/Seven Up Ballpark or a game of hockey with the Texas Tornado team at the Dr Pepper StarCenter. Keen shoppers have access to Frisco’s 4 million square feet of shopping space. Stonebriar Centre is one of the finest shopping malls in the Southwest, and The Centre at Preston Ridge outdoor shopping center is packed with restaurants and specialty shops. You will find yourself surrounded by art in Frisco, from bronze cattle drives depicting the Shawnee Trail, and artwork from around the world in Hall Office Park to the very special Texas Sculpture Garden. 

Collin County has numerous attractions to visit and enjoy. For history buffs, McKinney is home to the historic courthouse, the Heard-Craig Historic Center and Collin County Central Museum. Nature lovers will enjoy the Heard Natural Science Museum, the Wildlife Sanctuary and the Bolin Wildlife Exhibit. You can enjoy some shopping at Third Monday Trade Days, the oldest and largest flea market in north Texas. For some sporting fun visit Wilson Creek Skate Place & Batting Cages or Myers Park and Event Center.  

In Irving, you won’t want to miss the Movie Studios at Las Colinas. Tour the Amon Carter and Cattlemen’s Museums in Fort Worth and the Fort Worth Museum of Science and History, with its amazing Omni Theater. Or visit Billy Bob's Texas, known as the world's largest honky-tonk. The Fort Worth Botanical Garden is a floral delight, while sports fans will want to visit the ballpark in Arlington, home of the Texas Rangers professional baseball team. With a trip to Dallas, you can visit the Arboretum and Botanical Society, the Dallas Zoo, and Fair Park-home of the Texas State Fair. So much to see and do!
